Cameras and files
Will it open my files?
Almost certainly. Cullwise reads RAW from every major camera maker and JPEG from anything. Below is what it opens, and—separately—the bodies it has actually been run against, which is a shorter and more honest list.
RAW it opens
| Nikon | NEF, NRW |
|---|---|
| Canon | CR3, CR2, CRW |
| Sony | ARW, SR2, SRF |
| Fujifilm | RAF |
| OM System · Olympus | ORF |
| Panasonic · Lumix | RW2 |
| Pentax · Ricoh | PEF |
| Leica | DNG, RWL |
| Hasselblad | 3FR, FFF |
| Phase One | IIQ |
| Samsung | SRW |
| GoPro | GPR |
| Anyone writing DNG | DNG |
Compressed, lossless and uncompressed variants all open, including Canon’s C-RAW and Nikon’s high-efficiency compression.
Everything else it opens
| JPEG | Full support, from any camera or phone. Rated, reviewed and exported the same as RAW. |
|---|---|
| RAW + JPEG | Shoot both and both appear. Neither hides the other. |
Bodies it has been tested against
Every camera below has had real files from it run through a full cull. This is the tested list, not the supported list — the supported list is above and is much longer.
| Nikon | Z9, Z8, Zf, Z6 III, Z5 II, Z50 II |
|---|---|
| Canon | R3, R5, R5 Mark II, R6 Mark II, R6 Mark III, R7, R8 |
| Sony | α1 II, α9 III, α7R V, α7 V, α7 IV, α7C II |
Tested across compression modes as well as bodies — lossless, lossy and uncompressed where the camera offers the choice, because that is what actually breaks a reader.
If your camera is not on the tested list
It will almost certainly work — the tested list is limited by which sample files we could get hold of, not by what Cullwise can read.
Try it during the fourteen-day trial, which is free and needs no card. If something does not open, we want to hear which body: an unsupported camera is a bug, not a limitation we expect you to live with. Support says how to reach us.
What it does not open
| HEIF · HIF | The 10-bit stills mode on recent Canon and Sony bodies. Not yet. |
|---|---|
| TIFF · PSD · PNG | Editing formats rather than capture formats. Cullwise works on what came out of the camera. |
| Video, as frames | Clips are copied off your card and kept safe, but they are not rated or reviewed. |
A format only appears on this site once Cullwise can read it at full resolution. Reading a small preview and calling it support would mean judging your photographs on a thumbnail without telling you.
What it brings off the card without opening
A card holds more than photographs, and formatting it after an ingest should never lose any of it.
| Video | MOV, MP4, M4V, AVI, MTS, M2TS, MXF, BRAW, R3D |
|---|---|
| Voice memos | WAV, MP3, M4A — the note you recorded on the body. Cullwise plays it back beside the frame it belongs to. |
| Sidecars and extras | XMP, THM, XML, AAE, LRV, DOP, PP3, ON1 |
Anything that belongs to a photograph follows it — through the ingest, through a rename, through a move. The pair never comes apart.
The Mac it runs on
| Chip | Apple silicon — M1 or newer. The installer refuses an Intel Mac rather than install something that will not run. |
|---|---|
| macOS | 12 Monterey or newer |
| Disk | About 2.5 GB. Everything is inside the application; nothing is downloaded on first run and it works offline. |
